Textured Ceiling Removal
Textured Ceiling Removal

Textured (or “popcorn”) ceilings were once a popular interior finish across New Zealand homes.
Today, many homeowners choose to remove them to achieve a cleaner, brighter, and more modern look — and to address maintenance and safety concerns associated with older ceiling textures.
Textured ceilings became widely used because they were quick, cost-effective, and fashionable at the time.
Spraying on texture allowed builders to avoid the time and cost involved in fully skimming and taping ceiling joins to achieve a perfect paint finish. The texture helped disguise imperfections, reduced labour costs, and sped up construction — making it an attractive option for both builders and homeowners. For many years, textured ceilings were also considered a stylish, modern feature.
Over time, textured ceilings proved to be impractical and difficult to maintain.
They are hard to clean, easily collect dust and cobwebs, and can deteriorate as they age. In many cases, poor-quality textures were applied with insufficient binder (resin), causing sections to loosen and fall away — sometimes ending up on the floor and requiring constant vacuuming.
More concerning, many older textured ceilings contain asbestos, which presents a serious health risk if disturbed or damaged. As awareness grew around these issues, textured ceilings quickly went out of fashion.
