We started our Kowhai Home Improvement business in 1977 which along with other services included spraying up textured ceilings. They were extremely popular at that time – we could spray out a house in a day and only needed stopping good enough for a texture finish as against a paint finish.

There were many companies spraying on textures (we had 3 vans on the road) along with heaps of others doing the same. Our selling points were;
Very fashionable
Hide a multitude of sins
Very cost effective when compared with a paint finish. One man could spray a house in a day.
Low maintenance – didn’t require repeated repainting
Hide fly marks
You could even have glitter!
Later we started manufacturing the texture ourselves. This was after 1983 when the law prohibited the use of asbestos which was used as a binder. In the end texture ceilings became unfashionable and we dropped out of the texture business totally.
How we got into texture ceiling removals
We started the texture removal business again quite by chance. A previous customer rang to see if we could remove our old work, it was winter and we had just started paint manufacture. I said yes, as winter is very quiet for manufacturing paint. I ran a few advertisements and from there realised that there was a demand and so having put them up years earlier found we had an even better business removing them.
We can fairly claim now to have removed more textured ceilings by far than anyone in New Zealand and it reached its peak in 2008. There are many less to remove now and for those that still need taking off we are fortunate to have retained some of our staff. We put our success down to paying our team well but also, we relied on turnover rather than excessive margins.
